What is a hemothorax?

A hemothorax refers specifically to the presence of blood in the pleural space, which is the thin fluid-filled space between the layers of the pleura surrounding the lungs. This condition can occur due to trauma, such as a rib fracture or penetrating injury, but can also result from medical conditions or procedures. The accumulation of blood in this area can compromise lung function and lead to respiratory distress, as it interferes with the normal expansion of the lungs during breathing.
