What is a common complication associated with volvulus?

Volvulus refers to a condition where a part of the intestine twists around itself, which can lead to a blockage. As the affected segment of the intestine twists, it can obstruct the flow of intestinal contents, resulting in intestinal obstruction. This obstruction can manifest as symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, distension, and the inability to pass gas or stool.

The nature of volvulus inherently involves twisting of the bowel, making obstruction a direct and common complication. This obstruction may further lead to serious consequences if not promptly addressed, such as ischemia (reduced blood supply) or perforation of the bowel.

Other conditions like chronic diarrhea, diverticulitis, and appendicitis do not directly stem from volvulus. While they may be significant in their own right, they are not complications associated with the twisting of the intestines that characterizes volvulus.
